新加坡開國總理李光耀生前與兩岸關係深厚，從兩岸關係來看，李光耀是兩岸領袖都信任的「傳話者」，反對台獨，也不願見統一；高調拉攏美國「抑制」中國，強調亞洲區域平衡。
根據BBC中文網，以「剪不斷理還亂」形容李光耀的中國情結。李光耀一生推崇儒家文化，曾30多次到訪中國，給予大陸前國家領導人鄧小平等人建議。
在胡錦濤、溫家寶執政時期，李光耀曾經面對「美國要把中國視為敵人，還是朋友」問題，他指出，兩者都不是，接下來的20年，與美國打交道的將是不同背景的中國領袖。胡錦濤與溫家寶是最後一批受蘇聯時代影響的領導人，他們的第一外語是俄語，但年輕一輩領袖的第一外語是英語，了解英國、歐洲與美國，這對外國而言是非常不同的挑戰。
李光耀也曾經於2009年10月警告美國，如果美國沒有意識到亞太地區是未來的經濟活動中心，而失去在此區域的經濟優勢或在太平洋地區的領導力，那麼美國就會失去世界的領導地位。
對於亞太局勢，李光耀當時也指出，無論是日本或印度都沒有能力抗衡中國，他從擔任總理起就主張，要想維持東亞的穩定，必須保持日、美、中三方平。
